Global yearly soil moisture for March

Soil Moisture is important to consider because it is linked to water availability especially for vegetation. Also it is important for habitat development because changes in soil moisture means a particular region will not be able to sustain its habitat. By comparing a given month over a number of years extreme events can be detected, if the frequency of extremes events increases (such as floods or droughts) then changes in habitat are to be expected

For example the northern hemisphere receives little rainfall but is not considered a dry areas because the moisture content of the soil is high. These northern regions are rich in wet lands but if these wet lands dry out then it impacts on the species richness e.g. migratory birds.
