The soil moisture in the Parana river basin has a seasonal pattern with times of high rain fall coinciding with higher soil moisture estimates. In actual fact as with run off the strong El Nino events in 1987, 1992, 1997 were captures where during these years Dec soil moisture was high compared to other years such as 1999. Soil moisture in the Parana basin is important as this is a soya producing region of Brazil.
