Lena River Basin Rainfall for January 1985 - 1999

There is a very distinct and has a simple rainfall pattern within the basin. The northern latitudes receive very low levels of rainfall and the more southern latitudes where the river originates receive slightly higher rainfall amounts. Low rainfall amounts are expected and the river is frozen for periods, as a result flow in the river is confined to certain months of the year. A large section of the land surface of this river basin experiences permafrost. This means water is kept in the frozen soils. Any increase in temperature from green house gases can alter the permafrost, impacting on the hydrology of the system.
