Murray Darling River Basin Rainfall for June 1985 - 1999

There is a clear east west divide, with the coastal eastern areas receiving higher rainfall than the arid inland areas. This pattern is representative of the climatic conditions; the inland planes are the region with least rainfall. These planes experience the most arid conditions of the river basin with high evapotranspiration rates. The North Eastern section is located in the subtropics and is generally more humid than the inland planes. The eastern and in particular SE rim is crucial in maintaining flow in the river basin. This is because the SE area receives rainfall amounts above the basin average (basin average rain fall is 480mm/yr).
